Sherman Alexis was born in October 7 , 1966 on a Spokane Indian reservation in Washington. He’s a poet , novelist , novelist and filmmaker. He held the world heavyweight championship for poetry title . In this  text “what you pawn I will redeem “ I felt like he lived a life of a Spokane Indian . Native Americans were here before Christopher Columbus came and supposedly found America . Many natives were killed due to the fact that Columbus didn’t want anyone who didn’t look like him possibly taking over the land . Native Americans had dark skin compared to the Europeans , spoke a different language and practiced another culture he seen them as a threat . They saw that as a threat and killed many Indians . In 1830 there was the Indian removal act . President Andrew Jackson believed that Indians were in the way of people building homes and growing crops . He saw them as an inferior race . The US army removed 60,000 Indians westward for new territory . Thousands of people die along the way which was known as the trail of tears . As the whites rushed the Indians westward their territory continue to shrink . Which was later called reservations .

I feel like Sherman Alexie wrote this in order to point out how his people felt when they were kicked out of a place called they call  home . Living in these reservations felt like being homeless , it wasn’t actually a place to call home . Natives Americans felt unwanted and were mistreated like homeless people . Alexie made Jackson’s character homeless in order to show how homeless native Americans were when they were kicked out of their homes .

Jackson’s grandmothers regalia can represent their native tribe and culture . Natives got their land taken away from them so getting his grandmas regalia back was like getting a piece of who he really is back he couldn’t stand it being sold in a store .

I really enjoyed reading this text because it really shows that money doesn’t hold any value to someone’s character . Even though he was a drunk he was kind hearted and very selfless .

If Jackson would’ve came up with the money he actually made do you think the pawnshop ow do you think the story would’ve been different

Do you think Jackson is a hero ?

I enjoyed reading this text because I have read it before in my previous english class when I was attending Bronx Community College . I would’ve definitely presented it to the class better . I don’t like public speaking which is why I feel like I am bad at it . This text is was also interesting to me because it gave me an impression that said you can feel like a prisoner in your own home. Alexis’ purpose of writing this story was to put out the injustices and the mistreatment of his people and how their land had been taken away from them as if they didn’t discover it . And the way he did it he used a metaphor of being homeless to describe the feeling of being robbed his land that was for the Native Americans .
